Topic: Understanding Doxycylline 100mg (ANADA)
Posted by: SunnySkies94Posted on June 8, 2023 at 10:15 AM
Hi everyone,
I was recently prescribed Doxycycline 100 mg for an infection. I noticed it's labeled as "ANADA." Could someone explain what this means? Also, are there any particular things I should be mindful of when taking it?
Thanks in advance!SunnySkies94

Hi SunnySkies94,
Great question! ANADA stands for "Abbreviated New Animal Drug Application." However, when you see it in the context of human medication like Doxycycline, it typically refers to an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA). This means that the drug has been approved by the FDA as a generic equivalent to a brand-name drug. The manufacturer must prove that the generic is bioequivalentmeaning it works in the same way and with similar absorption ratesto the original drug.
Important Points:
- Dosage: Take Doxycycline exactly as prescribed, usually once or twice daily.
- Side Effects: Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sensitivity to sunlight. If you experience any severe side effects like severe stomach pain, difficulty breathing, or swelling in your face, lips, or throat, stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical help.
- Sunlight Sensitivity: Be sure to use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when going outside as Doxycycline can increase sensitivity to sunlight.
- Antacids and Dairy Products: Avoid taking antacids containing aluminum, calcium, magnesium, or iron supplements within two hours before or after your dose. Also, avoid dairy products for the same reason.

Thank you so much for your detailed response! It's really helpful. Just one more thinghow long should I expect to take this medication? And is there anything I should do after finishing the course?

You're welcome, SunnySkies94!
The duration of treatment depends on what it's being prescribed for. For bacterial infections, the typical course is usually between 7 to 14 days, but this can vary depending on the severity and type of infection.
After Finishing the Course:
- Follow-up: Make sure you complete all the doses even if you start feeling better before they are finished. Stopping early might cause the bacteria to return and potentially become resistant.
- Symptoms Check-In: After finishing your course, monitor any lingering symptoms or signs of recurrence. Its a good idea to schedule a follow-up appointment with your doctor to ensure that the infection is fully cleared.
If you experience any issues after completing the medication, dont hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance.
