Forum Topic: Doxycycline for Dogs - Advice from a Vet
Posted by: PetLover91
Hi everyone,
I recently noticed my dog, Bella, has been scratching more than usual and I've seen some redness on her skin. My vet recommended doxycycline but didn't go into too much detail. Could anyone share their experience with this medication for dogs? Also, where can I get it in Canada?

Hello PetLover91,
I'm glad you reached out! Doxycycline is an antibiotic that's commonly used to treat various bacterial infections and some skin conditions in dogs. It belongs to a class of antibiotics called tetracyclines.
Heres what I typically advise when prescribing doxycycline:
Dosage: The dosage will vary based on your dog's weight, but generally, it ranges from 2 to 5 mg per pound (1 to 2.5 mg/kg) twice a day.
Duration of Treatment: Its important to follow the prescribed duration of treatment. Typically, you should see some improvement in about 48 hours, but the full course is crucial even if symptoms improve.

Thanks VetDoc24! That's really helpful. Can you tell me more about the potential side effects? And also, where can I get it in Canada?

Sure thing!
Potential Side Effects:- Gastrointestinal issues: This is the most common side effect, including vomiting or diarrhea. You may need to give the medication with food.
Sun Sensitivity: Some dogs might experience increased sensitivity to sunlight when taking doxycycline. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sun.
Staining of Teeth (in Puppies): Although it's less common in adult dogs, this can be a concern for puppies.
As for purchasing it in Canada:

Hey PetLover91,
In Canada, you can get doxycycline through your veterinarian or at a pharmacy with a prescription. Its not available over-the-counter because it's an antibiotic and needs to be prescribed based on the dog's specific condition.
If your vet prescribes it, theyll likely give you the medication directly or provide a script that you can take to any pharmacy in Canada.

Thanks VetDoc24 and CanadianPetOwner! This has been really helpful. I'll make sure to follow the prescribed dosage and keep an eye on Bellas reaction. Any tips for ensuring she takes her medication without fuss?

Certainly!
Medication Flavoring: You can use flavoring like tuna juice or chicken broth to mask the taste of the pill.
Capsules/Soft Gels: Sometimes, doxycycline comes in a capsule form that you can open and mix with food. Just be sure not to crush the tablet inside the capsule.
Administering the Pill: If your dog is resistant, you might need to gently hold their mouth closed for a few seconds after administering the pill to ensure they swallow it.

Also, consistency in the routine helps. Try to give her medication at the same time every day so she gets used to it. And dont forget to praise and reward her with treats or petting afterward to make it a positive experience!
Feel free to ask if you have any more questions, PetLover91! Good luck with Bellas treatment.
