Forum Topic: Prednisone for Poison Ivy

Post by LeafLover123

Hey everyone,

I recently got into some poison ivy and my skin is absolutely itching like crazy. A friend suggested using prednisone to help with the inflammation. Has anyone tried this before? Should I head down to the pharmacy or see a doctor?

Looking forward to your advice!

LeafLover123,

Prednisone can indeed be effective for reducing swelling and itchiness associated with poison ivy, but it's important that you get it prescribed. Prednisone is not something you should buy over-the-counter; it's a corticosteroid and comes with its own set of risks if not used properly.

I'd recommend scheduling an appointment with your doctor to discuss the severity of your symptoms and whether prednisone would be appropriate for you. They might also suggest other treatments depending on how bad your rash is, such as topical creams or antihistamines.

Hope this helps! Let me know what your doc says!

DrPepper54,

Thank you so much for the advice. I'll make an appointment with my doctor to get it checked out properly. Do you have any tips on how to manage the itching until then? It's driving me nuts.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I totally understand that waiting can be tough, especially when you're dealing with such intense itchiness. Here are a few things you might try in the meantime:

  • Cold Compresses: Applying cold compresses or ice packs wrapped in a towel to your skin can help reduce swelling and relieve itching.

  • Cool Baths: Adding colloidal oatmeal (not the kind for cooking) or baking soda to cool bath water can soothe irritated skin. Soak for about 15 minutes.

  • Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamines like Benadryl can help reduce itchiness and may even help you sleep better if you're having trouble because of the discomfort.

  • Topical Treatments: Hydrocortisone cream (available OTC) might also provide some relief, but be sure to follow the instructions on the package about how often to apply it.

Remember, these are just temporary measures. Its still a good idea to see your doctor for a proper evaluation and treatment plan. Hope this helps until you can get in to see them!

DrPepper54,

Thanks so much! I'll try the cold compresses and oatmeal bath tonight. Really appreciate all your help.

By the way, how long do you think it will take for my rash to go away once I start treatment? Its been about a week now and Im hoping it wont be too much longer!

LeafLover123,

Glad to hear that you're planning on giving those tips a try. The duration of your symptoms can really vary depending on several factors, like how severe the reaction is, how soon treatment starts after exposure, and individual differences in healing.

Typically, poison ivy rashes last about 1-3 weeks, but with proper care, including treatments prescribed by your doctor such as prednisone if deemed necessary, you can expect relief within a few days to a week. The key is consistency with the treatment plan provided by your healthcare provider.

Keep an eye out for any signs of infection (increased redness, pus, or fever) and let your doctor know right away if you notice these symptoms as they might need additional care.

Hang in there! You're on the way to recovery.
