Thread Title: Prednisone Dosage for Sinusitis - Help Needed!

Posted by: SunshineGlowHi everyone! I've been dealing with some pretty severe sinusitis lately and my doctor prescribed me prednisone. He mentioned something about starting at 20 mg a day but didn't go into much detail about how long to take it or if the dosage would change. Could someone who's experienced with this share their thoughts on whats normal for this kind of treatment?

Posted by: HappyDocHi SunshineGlow! It sounds like you're dealing with quite a bit of discomfort from your sinusitis. Prednisone is often prescribed to reduce inflammation, especially when it gets severe and doesnt respond well to other treatments.

The typical starting dose for sinusitis can indeed be around 20 mg per day, which is standard. Your doctor may have recommended this initial dosage to help bring down the swelling in your sinuses quickly.

However, it's important that you follow up with your healthcare provider about the duration of treatment and any tapering schedule they might recommend. Usually, after a few days (typically 3-5), your doctor will reassess your condition and may start reducing the dosage slowly to prevent side effects from prolonged use.

Do you have specific concerns or questions regarding how this works?

Posted by: SunshineGlowThanks for the info, HappyDoc! It definitely helps knowing that it's a common starting dose. My main worry is about the duration of treatment and if there are any risks I should be aware of with prolonged use.

Also, do you think tapering down the dosage might cause a relapse in symptoms? Im quite sensitive to changes like this.

Posted by: HappyDocYoure welcome! It's great that you're thinking about these concerns. The duration really depends on your individual response and how severe your sinusitis is. Often, for short-term relief, the treatment might last between 5-7 days at full dosage, but it can vary.

Regarding risks of prolonged use, some common side effects include increased appetite leading to weight gain, mood changes, difficulty sleeping, and in more serious cases, issues like high blood pressure or diabetes if taken for a long time. So, your doctor aims to keep the treatment as short as possible while effectively managing your symptoms.

As for tapering down, its generally recommended to reduce the dose slowly under medical supervision. This helps avoid adrenal insufficiency and minimizes any risk of symptom relapse. Your healthcare provider will likely adjust your dosage based on how you're responding each time they evaluate you.

If youre sensitive to changes in medication, communicating this clearly with your doctor is key. They can then tailor the tapering schedule to make sure its as smooth as possible for you.

Have any other questions or concerns? Let's address them!

Posted by: SunshineGlowThank you so much! That was really helpful and reassuring. I think Ill feel more comfortable discussing this further with my doctor now, knowing what to expect and the risks involved.

I just hope it doesnt take too long to see an improvement Im tired of feeling all congested and miserable!

Posted by: HappyDocYoure welcome! Its good that you're taking a proactive approach. Most patients start seeing improvements within the first few days of starting prednisone, so there's hope on the horizon.

Remember to stay hydrated and use saline nasal sprays or rinses to help with congestion in the meantime. These can provide some immediate relief while your medication kicks in fully.

If you dont see significant improvement after a couple of days, definitely touch base with your doctor again. They might need to adjust something based on how your body is responding.

Take care and I hope you start feeling better soon!

Posted by: SunshineGlowThanks again! Feeling more hopeful now. Will keep hydrated and use saline sprays in the meantime. Fingers crossed for quick relief!
