Hello @SkinSavior,
Roaccutane (isotretinoin) is indeed a powerful medication used to treat severe acne that hasnt responded well to other treatments. It can be very effective but does come with its own set of considerations.
The dosage you have been prescribed, 40 mg daily, might vary depending on the severity and specifics of your condition. Typically, dosages range from 0.5 to 1 mg per kilogram of body weight.
Here are a few things to consider:- Side Effects: Common side effects include dry skin, lips, and eyes. You might need to use moisturizers regularly.- Mental Health: Some individuals report mood changes or depression while on Roaccutane. If you experience any unusual feelings, its important to reach out to your doctor.- Pregnancy: This medication is not safe during pregnancy. It's crucial to use reliable contraception if theres any chance of becoming pregnant.- Blood Tests: Regular blood tests are required to monitor liver function and lipid levels.
Have you had a consultation with a dermatologist about this? They will be able to provide more personalized advice based on your medical history.

Hi @DocInWhiteCoat,
Thanks for the detailed information. Ive been on Roaccutane myself and found it really effective. One thing to add is that you might experience an initial breakout before things start to get better. This is normal, so dont be discouraged if your skin doesn't look better right away.
Also, make sure you keep up with good skincare habits like gentle cleansing and using non-comedogenic moisturizers. I found that using a humidifier in my room helped with the dryness.
@SkinSavior: Youll probably feel more confident once you get into the routine of taking it daily and managing any side effects. Its important to stick with your doctor's advice and attend all follow-up appointments!

@DocInWhiteCoat @SmoothSkinGuru,
Thank you both for the insightful replies. I did consult with a dermatologist before starting Roaccutane. They went over all the potential side effects and advised me on what to expect.
I will definitely take your advice about skincare and monitoring my mood. It's comforting to hear from someone who has gone through it and found success.
Do you have any tips for managing the dryness? I already use moisturizers, but they dont seem to help much.

@SkinSavior,
Dryness can be a significant issue while on Roaccutane. Here are some additional tips you might find helpful:- Lip Balm: Use a lip balm with ingredients like petrolatum or beeswax to keep your lips moisturized.- Humidifier: As @SmoothSkinGuru mentioned, using a humidifier can help maintain moisture in the air and reduce skin dryness.- Moisturizers: Look for ones that are fragrance-free and designed for sensitive skin. Ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid can be particularly beneficial.- Sunscreen: Even if youre not feeling any sunburn, its important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily because Roaccutane can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage.
If the dryness becomes severe or persistent despite these measures, please contact your dermatologist. They may prescribe stronger moisturizers or other treatments.

@SkinSavior,
I totally get that dryness can be frustrating! Heres what worked for me:
- Ointments vs. Lotions: Sometimes, ointments are more effective than lotions because they have a higher oil content and can seal in moisture better.
- Exfoliate Gently: Avoid harsh exfoliants which could irritate your skin further. Opt for gentle scrubs or use a soft washcloth instead.
Remember to be patient with your skin as it adjusts to the medication. Over time, youll likely find what works best for you!
Good luck on your journey to clearer skin!
